20-03-2015 07:00

Five people have died and up to twenty-five people are feared trapped in rubble after a fire at a shopping centre in the Russian city of Kazan. The raging flames engulfed the building on Wednesday at around 1 p.m.

It started in a cafe on the first floor of the three-storey mall and covered an area of around 4,000 square metres. More than 600 people were cleared from the building. Gas was turned off in time to prevent the fire from spreading further, and three helicopters were dispatched to join the rescue operation. Part of the centre collapsed and emergency officials said that sixteen people were being treated in hospital.

Russia’s emergency ministry has not yet confirmed the cause of the fire.

Difficult words: trapped (unable to move), rubble (pieces of a broken building), raging (continuing with great force), engulf (to cover completely), clear (to evacuate), prevent (to stop something bad from happening), dispatch (to send off to help).
