Scarlett Johansson and OpenAI chatbot – level 3

28-05-2024 15:00

Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson expressed shock and anger after OpenAI launched a chatbot with a voice eerily similar to hers.

When the new model was released last week, many noticed the resemblance between the chatbot’s Sky voice and Johansson’s voice in the 2013 film Her. The actress had previously declined OpenAI’s offer to voice the new chatbot, which reads text aloud to users. OpenAI announced it would remove the voice, emphasizing that it was not intended to imitate Johansson.

Johansson is now seeking legal advice and criticized OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman for implying a connection between her and the chatbot by using the word ‘her’ on social media. Altman clarified that Sky’s voice was chosen before reaching out to Johansson, and the company paused using the voice out of respect for her.

Difficult words: resemblance (similarity), imitate (to copy a person’s speech, looks, and so on), imply (to suggest indirectly).
