Scientists study panda poo – level 2

06-10-2015 07:00

Scientists are studying the poo of giant pandas. The scientists want to know how the pands digest bamboo.

Bamboo is very hard, and originally pandas ate meat. They adapted to a diet which consists of bamboo only. Pandas also only eat some parts of the bamboo, and the experts want to know why.

The scientists are interested in this because they can learn from it. The results may show new cheaper ways to produce so-called second generation biofuels. These biofuels are made from plants and biomass.

Difficult words: poo (what comes out of the body after you eat something), digest (to change food into energy), biofuel (energy for homes and vehicles from digestion), biomass (energy from plants).

You can read the original story and watch the video in the Level 3 section.

What do you think about pandas helping make fuel?
