Security in West Africa – level 3

09-12-2022 07:00

West African leaders said they would establish a regional peacekeeping force to restore regional security and constitutional order.

Although West and Central Africa have made steps to change their reputations as a ‘coup belt’, the region witnessed several coups in the past two years. The Economic Commission for West African States, ECOWAS, wants to boost constitutional governments in its member states.

On December 4, 2022, ECOWAS leaders met at an annual summit in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. They didn’t give any details of what would constitute the force; however, they said that they would meet next month to establish the force’s operations. They also expressed concern over the continued detention of 46 Ivorian soldiers in Mali, and they asked Malian authorities to release them by the end of this month.

Difficult words: constitutional order (the laws and rules of a country’s constitution which most people follow), reputation (the general beliefs or opinions), constitute (to establish by law).
