Social media and our health – level 2

04-06-2024 07:00

In Charville, Australia, 18-year-old Jordi serves coffee while using social media a lot. She used to be online for 7-8 hours daily, mostly on TikTok and Snapchat. Now, she spends around 5.5 hours a day. Jordi reduced her time on social media because of bullying. Also, she felt that she needed to look perfect. Boys at her school told her to kill herself on TikTok, which was very upsetting. Despite this, Jordi found it hard to stop using social media. She was afraid that she would miss out on something important.

Dr. Werner-Sidler studies how social media affects teen mental health. She says that we need more data from tech companies. These companies have safety rules, but people don’t always follow them. Jordi supports stronger rules for social media. She is grateful that her mom helped her reduce screen time.

Difficult words: bully (to be mean to someone or hurt them repeatedly), mental health (how well a person manages stress, can learn, work, and interact with others), screen time (how much time a person spends watching TV or using a phone, computer and so on).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are some of the reasons Jordi reduced her time spent on social media, according to the text?
