South Korean doctors protest – level 2

28-02-2024 07:00

Trainee doctors in South Korea are protesting against the government’s plan to accept more students to medical schools.

Doctors argue that improving pay and working conditions is more important than admitting more students. The protests disrupt hospital services, hospitals cancel surgeries, and emergency rooms and full. Trainees work long hours and they believe that hiring senior staff would solve the problems. The government plans to admit 2,000 students by 2025 to deal with future doctor shortages.

Some people say that there are enough doctors, and the plan will not solve more important problems.

Difficult words: disrupt (to bring problems or difficulties), senior staff (people who do a job for a longer time and have more skills), shortage (not enough of something).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are some possible solutions to the issues faced by trainee doctors in South Korea, as mentioned in the article?
