South Korean president arrested – level 2
17-01-2025 15:00
Authorities arrested South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol after he tried to declare martial law. This is the first time a sitting president is arrested in the country.
Authorities had to get into his residence using ladders and tools. Yoon agreed to go to the Corruption Investigation Office to stop violence but still says the investigation is illegal. Supporters of Yoon protested, and they even stayed overnight in the cold to stop the arrest.
Now, Yoon faces charges of insurrection and will stay in a prison in Seoul. The court has 180 days to decide. If Yoon is guilty, South Korea must have a new election within 60 days. Many see this event as a test of South Korea’s democracy.
Difficult words: martial law (military rule during an emergency), investigation (examining a crime, problem, or situation), insurrection (a legal process to remove a leader).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What charges is South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol facing and what will happen if he is found guilty?
