South Korea’s last summer with dog meat – level 2

21-08-2026 07:00

South Korea is preparing for a complete ban on dog meat, which starts in February 2027. In the past, many people ate traditional dog meat stew during the hottest days of summer to get more energy.

Things are changing, and most South Koreans now support animal welfare and keep pets at home. Surveys show that over 80 percent of people agree with the new law. Today, mainly older people still eat dog meat. Markets are changing, and many restaurants now sell black goat stew instead.

Business owners understand that society is changing, but some feel sad for their elderly customers who travel long distances for their favorite traditional meal. The government is planning to help farm owners and sellers move to new businesses.

Difficult words: stew (a dish of meat and vegetables cooked slowly together in liquid), welfare (the health and happiness of people or animals), elderly (old people).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What alternative dish are many restaurants now selling?
