Sri Lanka’s toxic beaches – level 1
04-08-2025 07:00
There is a big problem on Sri Lanka’s beaches. A ship sinks in the sea. Small plastic balls, oil, and dangerous chemicals are coming to the land.
These plastic balls are called nurdles. Fish and other animals can eat them and get sick. Fishermen are worried. Many people are cleaning the beach, but it is hard. In 2021, another ship burns near the coast. That ship has to pay money for hurting nature.
Now people want the same thing. They want better rules and tools to stop this from happening again. Sri Lanka needs to keep the sea clean and help the animals.
Difficult words: chemical (a substance which people make and do not come from nature), fisherman (a person who catches fish), tool (a machine or device which you use to do a job or solve a problem).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What do people in Sri Lanka hope to achieve by demanding better rules and tools?
