Syria’s only woman minister – level 3
09-02-2026 07:00
Hind Kabawat is Syria’s minister for social affairs and labour and the only woman in the country’s transitional government.
She spoke openly about her worry that there are not enough women in power and said this was a mistake at the start of the transition. After years of war and dictatorship, the new government must show change and responsibility.
Kabawat lived in exile for many years and now works with many women in her ministry. She says she doesn’t see herself as a symbol, but as someone who serves people. She rejects the idea that she is only there for show and says she needs real power, plans, and money to help people.
Her work includes visiting camps where families live in poor conditions with little help. Violence between groups has hurt trust in the new leaders. Kabawat calls for patience and asks for dialogue and respect during Syria’s difficult move toward peace.
Difficult words: transitional government (a temporary group that leads a country while it changes to a new system), dictatorship (a system where one person or group has all the power), exile (life away from the home country).
