Taiwan is good at recycling – level 3
27-01-2026 15:00
Taiwan has one of the best recycling systems in the world. In the past, the country had serious trash problems; however, strong rules changed people’s daily habits.
People pay for waste that they cannot recycle, so they try to produce less trash. Cities remove most public bins, which means people keep their waste until special trucks arrive several times a week. This system makes people more responsible and reduces cheating.
The government works with private companies that collect and sort waste. A national recycling fund supports these companies, and producers and importers pay into it. This rule makes companies responsible for the plastic they sell. AI robots help sort many kinds of materials faster than humans, but workers still handle difficult tasks.
Taiwan recycles most household plastic, and only a small amount goes to burning plants. Still, some weak plastic cannot return to use and ends in fire plants. The system shows strong results, but it also has limits.
Difficult words: habit (something you do often and usually without thinking), fund (money saved for a purpose), importer (a person or company that brings goods into a country from another country).

How do the removal of most public bins and the fee for non-recyclable waste work together to encourage personal responsibility and reduce cheating in Taiwan’s recycling system?
