The EU plans sanctions on Russian gas – level 2

13-05-2024 07:00

European countries are discussing new rules to stop the movement of Russian natural gas.

The EU wants to prevent Russian gas from being sent to other countries after arriving in European ports. With these rules, the EU wants to put Russia under pressure and hurt its economy. So far, the Russian government always found ways to deal with sanctions. That is why some people doubt if the new rules will help.

It is not easy to make a deal among all twenty-seven member countries. Therefore, to agree on the new rules may take some time.

Difficult words: prevent (to stop something from happening), pressure (force or influence), sanction (an action which a country or countries take to force a country to follow international laws).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What is the purpose of the EU's proposed rules regarding the movement of Russian natural gas, and why are there doubts about their effectiveness?
