The Imbolc Fire Festival – level 3

The Imbolc Fire Festival is thousands of years old and began in the village of Marsden, England.

People come to this festival to celebrate the arrival of Spring and the end of Winter as the festival happens halfway between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox.

This year, thousands of spectators came to see the torch-lit procession of people in druid costumes. The festival organiser said that this year there are two giants in the festival with one representing Winter as Jack Frost and the other representing Spring as the Green Man. A battle happens between them and the Green Man wins since Spring is beginning.

Difficult words: Winter Solstice (the shortest possible day of the year), Spring Equinox (when the day and night are of equal lengths), procession (a parade), druid (a priest or a magician from the ancient Celtic religion, or a present-day person who believes in this religion), Jack Frost (a personification of Winter), Green Man (a personification of the forest and plant growth).
