The Swiss vote on neutrality – level 1

05-10-2026 07:00

People in Switzerland say no to new neutrality rules. Most people vote against an idea from a right-wing party.

The new rules want to stop Switzerland from working with NATO or using economic sanctions during wars. The Swiss government wants to be free and decide how it needs to. People are happy with how things are now. Swiss people want to stay friends with other European countries and help Ukraine.

Switzerland wants to keep its current system. But if a big war starts near Europe, Switzerland may have to think about its safety again.

Difficult words: neutrality (when you do not take sides in a conflict or war), sanction (an official action against a country to stop its illegal actions), safety (when you are safe).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What did the proposed neutrality rules aim to stop Switzerland from doing during wars?
