The Swiss vote on neutrality – level 2

05-10-2026 07:00

More than two-thirds of Swiss voters said no to a proposal for stricter rules on neutrality. A right-wing political party wanted to stop Switzerland from making agreements with NATO or using sanctions against countries at war.

The Swiss government opposed the idea and said it would limit their choices during international conflicts. Swiss people prefer the current flexible situation, and they agree with how the government handled sanctions after Russia invaded Ukraine. They view neighboring European nations as natural allies.

The vote shows that voters want the government to keep its current power to react to future global events. But if a war reaches a NATO country, Switzerland may need to change its rules again in the future.

Difficult words: neutrality (the position of not taking any side in a conflict, war, or argument), oppose (to disagree with something or try to stop a plan or idea), flexible (able to change easily), ally (a person, group, or country that helps and supports another).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Under what circumstance might Switzerland need to change its neutrality rules again in the future?
