The UK says yes to drilling in the North Sea – level 2

29-10-2026 07:00

The UK government approved a new project to drill for gas in the North Sea. Energy companies say this project will help produce more gas for the country.

Leaders argue that using local gas makes the country safer as global conflict causes energy prices to rise. The prime minister explained that the country still needs gas while moving toward green energy.

Environmental groups and green politicians strongly disagree with the plan. They warn that drilling produces harmful emissions and will not lower electricity bills for normal families. Activists argue that the government should focus on renewable energy like wind and solar instead of fossil fuels.

Difficult words: approve (to officially agree), harmful (when something hurts living things or the planet), renewable energy (energy from natural sources, such as wind, sun, and so on).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How do leaders justify continuing to use gas while transitioning to green energy, and what objections and alternatives do environmental groups and activists offer?
