The US-China TikTok deal – level 2
22-09-2025 07:00
The US and China make an agreement so TikTok can stay in the country. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent talks about this deal, and President Donald Trump writes online that young people will be very happy with it.
Trump delays three times a law that tells ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to sell part of the app. Politicians from both US parties support this law. They worry that the Chinese government can read American data and change TikTok’s algorithm.
TikTok is very popular in the US with more than 170 million users. The last delay of the ban ends on September 17, but now the new deal looks like a solution. Trump will also speak with China’s President Xi Jinping soon.
Difficult words: Treasury Secretary (the government person in charge of money), parent company (the main company which owns or controls another company), solution (a way to fix a problem).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Why do politicians from both US parties support the law requiring ByteDance to sell part of TikTok?
