Throwing away food is bad for the planet – level 1

12-01-2026 07:00

Food waste is a big problem for the planet.

People throw food away every day. Much of this food goes to landfills. There, food makes gas, which makes the world warmer. Burning food waste also makes bad gas called carbon dioxide. Food waste makes the world warmer.

Food waste happens in many places. Families throw away food, and shops too. Farms throw away food, too. Many farmers do not have cold places to keep food. The food goes bad fast. This means people lose food and work.

People can solve this problem. Better food storage helps. You should buy only what you need. When people throw away less food, they save land, water, energy, and work.

Difficult words: waste (what you throw away because you do not need it anymore), landfill (a place where people put things which they do not want anymore), storage (a place to keep things).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What causes food waste on farms, and how does this affect farmers’ livelihoods?
