Throwing away food is bad for the planet – level 3
12-01-2026 07:00
Food waste is a serious global problem, and it adds strongly to global warming.
When people throw food away, it often goes to landfills. There, food breaks down and releases methane, a gas that heats the planet much more than carbon dioxide.
When people burn food waste, it releases large amounts of carbon dioxide because food contains a lot of water. Scientists say food waste causes about eight to ten percent of all greenhouse gas output in the world. This amount is higher than emissions from many large countries.
Studies show that people waste food at many stages. Waste happens in homes and shops, but also on farms and during transport. New research suggests the real amount of wasted food is much higher than earlier reports. In poorer areas, farmers often lack storage or transport, so food rots before people can buy it. This waste also means a waste of land, energy, and work. Experts say food waste is a chance to act. Better storage, smaller food packs, and simple local solutions can cut waste. Reducing food waste can lower emissions and help feed more people without using more land.
Difficult words: landfill (a place where people put trash in the ground), output (the amount something produces), lack (to not have enough of something), rot (go bad and break down).
