Tickets to the Louvre cost more – level 3

16-01-2026 07:00

The Louvre Museum in Paris now asks visitors from outside Europe to pay a higher entry fee.

The price for individual visitors rises from 22 euros to 32 euros. Museum leaders say this change helps pay for repairs and updates at the building. Similar higher prices will appear at other famous cultural places in France.

This system uses dual pricing, which means people pay different prices based on where they come from. This idea is common in poorer countries but rare in Europe. Some visitors accept the higher price; however, others say it feels unfair and limits access to culture. Trade unions also say culture shouldn’t feel like a business product.

The French government supports the change and says the museum needs more money for safety and renovation. The Louvre plans to use the extra income for long-term projects. Children under 18 and young Europeans can still enter for free, but debate about fairness continues.

Difficult words: fee (money you pay for a service), dual (having two different parts or types), trade unions (a group that protects workers and their rights).

What reasons do museum leaders and the French government give for raising the entry fee from 22 euros to 32 euros?
