US and Central America – level 3
The US stopped aid to Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. The reason was that these countries did not stop illegal immigration to the US. Now, Donald Trump is starting the aid program again.
The three countries signed agreements about cooperation. The US will help with law enforcement and security. The Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, says that they want to support security, create economic opportunity, and help countries fulfill the agreement.
Donald Trump did not say how much this aid costs, but some sources say $143 million dollars.
Kevin McAleenan, the secretary of Department of Homeland Security, proposed the aid. He is leaving his job at the end of October.
