US government stops giving people food – level 3

09-12-2025 15:00

Food aid in the United States faces a deep crisis after major cuts by the federal government.

In Georgia, a local food pantry sees demand rise while its stock becomes smaller. Prices in shops go up, and many families cannot buy enough food. The average cost of food in the country is far higher than it was a few years ago, so pantry workers try to help more people with fewer supplies.

The long support system that once sent large amounts of food to food banks now grows weaker. Government cuts reduce the flow of aid from farms and national programs. Local groups and donors try to fill the gap, but the need in many cities grows fast. Leaders in food banks report that the number of families who need help increases sharply.

Families with serious health problems depend on these pantries for daily meals. Some people now receive fewer healthy foods and more cheap snacks. Workers and volunteers fear deeper cuts next year and worry about the future of the community.

Difficult words: aid (help that someone gives), donor (a person who gives money or things), volunteer (a person who works without pay).

How have government cuts affected both the supply at local food pantries and the types of food families receive?
