USA and Cuba – level 2

21-08-2015 07:00

The United States and Cuba renewed diplomatic relations four weeks ago. Now, people raised the American flag at Cuba’s US embassy.

The US Secretary of State, John Kerry, became the first chief of American diplomacy to visit Cuba in 70 years. He ushered in a new era between the two cold-war enemies.

Three retired Marines who last lowered the flag 54 years ago participated in the ceremony. Locals and tourists celebrated the changing times.

Difficult words: Secretary of State (the head of the State Department, responsible for foreign affairs), chief (a leader), usher in (to cause the start of something new).

You can read the original story and watch the video in the Level 3 section.

Do you think that this is good for Cuba and the USA?
