Virginia Protest – level 3

22-01-2020 15:00

The Virginia governor, Ralph Northam, declared a temporary state of emergency ahead of a gun rights rally that will take place in Richmond on January 20.

The rally is organized by The Virginia Defense League and demonstrators will protest against proposed gun control legislation. The group expects as many as 50,000 people to attend, and it encourages demonstrators to keep the protest peaceful.

The state of emergency bans firearms and other weapons from the Virginia State Capitol grounds, and it will last from Friday until Tuesday. Northam made the decision after he received information that militia groups and hate groups are expected to attend the demonstrations.

There was an incident in 2017 when a woman was killed, and many people were injured after a man drove his car into a crowd of protesters. Northam said that he will not allow such violence to happen again.

Difficult words: rally (a mass meeting of people), firearm (a gun that can be carried easily), militia group (an army or organization of non-professional soldiers or citizens who regard themselves as defenders of rights).
