War on drugs in Mexico – level 2

25-05-2015 07:00

Since 2007, Mexican gangs killed more than a hundred thousand people. The Mexican president pledged to put an end to this.

Last Friday, Mexican security forces killed forty-two drug cartel henchmen. It was one of the bloodiest shoot-outs in a decade of gang violence. One policeman also lost his life in the three-hour gunfight.

The killed were members of Jalisco New Generation which is a powerful drug cartel in the area. This cartel killed more than two dozen police officers since March.

Difficult words: pledge (to promise), henchman (a faithful follower who hurts and kills people), dozen (twelve).

You can read the original story and watch the video in the Level 3 section.
