Warm World – level 3

Last year was the second hottest year ever recorded, and last decade was the hottest decade since modern record keeping began in 1880. NASA and NOAA did separate studies and they announced their conclusions on Wednesday.

NOAA concluded that average temperatures in 2019 were 1.7 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the average temperatures for the whole century. The only hotter year than 2019 was 2016. The organization also reported that ocean heat content was the highest in 2019 and ocean heat contributed to rising sea levels.

A NASA official said that every decade since the 1960s has been warmer than the previous one, and this was a persistent change and not a fluke. NASA scientists have concluded that these changes are mostly caused by humans. The main cause is increasing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.

Difficult words: ocean heat content (the amount of heat that is stored in the ocean), fluke (something unplanned that happens as a result of chance), greenhouse gas (a gas that absorbs heat and causes warming in the atmosphere).
