World’s largest marine reptile – level 2

24-04-2024 07:00

A father and daughter found a fossil on a Somerset beach in England. Scientists identified it as a big marine reptile from 202 million years ago.

Ichthyotitan severnensis was between 22 and 26 meters long, similar in size to blue whales. It is one of the largest marine reptiles which we know. The animal lived during the Triassic Period alongside dinosaurs. This discovery and another one in 2016 confirm the existence of a new species and help us understand prehistoric marine life.

Very big sea creatures once lived in the oceans, and the fossils tell us a lot about the evolution of life on Earth.

Difficult words: marine (relating to the sea), reptile (an animal such as a snake, turtle, or crocodile), prehistoric (happening a very long time ago).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What information do fossils of large marine creatures such as Ichthyotitan severnensis provide about the history of life on Earth?
