Zelensky and Trump meet at Pope Francis’ funeral – level 3
29-04-2025 07:00
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump met for 15 minutes at Pope Francis’s funeral in St Peter’s Basilica.
The White House called the meeting very productive, and Zelensky said it was very symbolic and could even become historic. Both leaders spoke intensely just minutes before the funeral began, showing the importance of their conversation. The meeting happened just one day after Trump claimed that Russia and Ukraine were close to reaching a peace deal. His envoy had recently met President Putin in Moscow to discuss possible terms for ending the war.
Zelensky later shared on social media that they discussed a full ceasefire and protecting Ukrainian lives. Although the funeral was not meant for political discussions, this meeting could be a turning point. There is still uncertainty about whether Ukraine would accept giving up some territory in exchange for peace. However, the meeting gave hope that future agreements might be possible.
Difficult words: symbolic (representing an important idea), envoy (a person sent to speak or negotiate for someone else), ceasefire (an agreement to stop fighting).
