Old bones are found – level 3

01-05-2015 15:00

Buried deep inside this centuries-old crypt that archaeologists accidentally stumbled upon are these – a scatter of human bones that could total up to 32 complete skeletons. The discovery was made during restoration work at one of Peru’s earliest Christian sites, the Saint Francis of Assisi Temple. The state of the human remains are reported to be in bad condition after hundreds of years’ worth of disturbances at the site.

“On the surface of the crypt, we have found a total of 32 distinct remains that were found in a bad state, as a result the regular desecrations to the remains over years.”

Researchers say the crypt, which is thought to be more than 500 years old, was used as a burial site for early believers. Alongside the discovery, the team also found a mural of the Christian nativity scene which is believed to have been part of the original decoration at the temple.

Difficult words: crypt (an underground room for burying people), stumble (to find something by chance), scatter (things that are placed randomly over an area), temple (a building that is like a church), disturbance (a situation when people behave violently), distinct (special), desecration (the act of desecrating something or treating a place with violent disrespect), mural (a painting on a wall), nativity scene (a model which represents the birth of Jesus Christ).
