Throwing away food is bad for the planet – level 2

12-01-2026 07:00

Throwing away food is a big problem for the planet. When people throw food away, it often goes to landfills.

There, food creates methane, a gas which heats the Earth much more than carbon dioxide. Burning food waste also creates a lot of carbon dioxide because food holds water. Experts say food waste creates about eight to ten percent of global gas which warms the planet.

People throw away food everywhere. Families waste food at home, shops throw food away, and farms lose food too. New studies show farms waste much more food than people first thought. In many countries, farmers don’t have cold storage, so food gets bad before it reaches buyers.

Experts say people can solve this problem. Better storage, smaller food packs, and simple changes can help. When people waste less food, they protect the planet and save land, energy, and work.

Difficult words: landfill (a place where people put trash), waste (to throw away or not use), storage (a place to keep things).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What is one reason why farms in many countries lose so much food before it reaches buyers?
