The British government has approved drilling at a controversial North Sea gas field, despite strong opposition from environmental groups.

Energy companies welcomed the decision and predicted the project could supply over six percent of the nation’s gas at peak production. Officials argue that developing domestic resources is necessary to boost national energy security while global conflicts drive up fuel costs. The prime minister stated that although the country remains committed to long-term climate targets, oil and gas will still be needed during the transition to renewable energy.

However, climate activists and politicians heavily criticized the approval and warned that increased fossil fuel reliance won’t lower household energy bills because prices are dictated by international markets.
