A woman still lives after an execution – level 2

07-10-2026 07:00

A death row prisoner in Tennessee named Christa Pike is in the hospital after a failed execution attempt. Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for murder and was supposed to be the first woman executed in the state in over 200 years.

During the execution, doctors gave her two lethal injections, but witnesses said she was still breathing and snoring. Her lawyers quickly stopped the process, and emergency teams rushed her to a local hospital. Following the terrible event, the governor of Tennessee stopped all executions in the state to start a full investigation.

Human rights leaders from the United Nations called the failed attempt extremely cruel. This scary situation has created huge public concern across the United States about the safety and fairness of death penalty laws.

Difficult words: death row (a special section of a prison for people who wait for execution), execution (the legal ending of someone’s life), lethal (deadly), cruel (when someone or something causes pain or suffering to others).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What actions did her lawyers and emergency teams take after witnesses reported she was still breathing and snoring following two lethal injections?
