A woman still lives after an execution – level 3

07-10-2026 07:00

A botched execution in Tennessee has left 50-year-old death row prisoner Christa Pike alive in hospital after surviving two lethal injections.

Pike, who was sentenced to death in 1996 for a brutal murder, was set to become the first woman executed in the state in over 200 years. However, witnesses reported seeing her continue breathing and snoring long after the pentobarbital injections were administered. Following an emergency court motion, prison officials rushed her to hospital to receive life-saving care. The horrific incident sparked immediate international outrage and prompted UN human rights officials to call the failed execution cruel and abhorrent.

In response, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee launched a comprehensive investigation into the procedure and issued a temporary hold on all remaining executions scheduled for this year. The controversy has reopened major public debates across the United States regarding capital punishment and the reliability of lethal execution drugs.

Difficult words: botched (done very poorly or carelessly), lethal (deadly), pentobarbital (a strong sedative drug used in medical treatments and lethal injections), abhorrent (disgusting or shocking).
