Africa’s GMO crops – level 2

22-12-2022 07:00

In October 2022, Kenya’s new government lifted its ban on GMO maize.

Now people can grow and sell genetically modified maize, which worries some farmers. They say that GMO crops can destroy traditional crops. Farmers will have to work big foreign companies because these companies have patents for the GMO seeds.

The biggest drought in forty years hit Kenya, and official reports say that more than 4 million people have too little food. GMO maize could solve the problem, just like GMO helped another Kenyan industry. Cotton farms almost disappeared in Kenya, but GMO cotton helped farmers to grow it again and faster.

Difficult words: traditional (an action that people do or use for a long time without change), patent (an official document that says who can make, use, or sell something), drought (a long time without rain).
