Biodegradable tampons – level 3

13-03-2024 07:00

Plastic period products rank as the fifth most common single-use plastic item found on European beaches, surpassing plastic cups and straws, according to the European Parliament.

Efforts to tackle this issue include developing biopolymer-based alternatives, derived from algae, which are naturally white or colorless, eliminating the need for bleaching. These biopolymer fibers are used to create tampons, similar to those made from cotton or viscose.

While such alternatives absorb carbon, their climate neutrality depends on cultivation methods. Researchers and companies are exploring technologies for sustainable cultivation, both on land and in the sea, to produce these biodegradable hygiene products, offering a promising solution to reduce waste.

Difficult words: biopolymer (a polymer produced by living organisms), viscose (a smooth material similar to silk but made from cellulose), cultivation (growing or nurturing something).

You can watch the video news lower on this page.

What alternative materials are being used to create sustainable period products and how are researchers and companies working towards their cultivation?
