Cancer in space – level 2

20-03-2024 07:00

An experiment which sent cancer cells to space brought important findings about cancer growth and possible treatments.

In space, cancer cells grow much faster than on Earth, and it happens thanks to microgravity. Scientists focused on the adar1 gene, which plays a role in cancer recurrence. Scientists manipulated this gene, they were able to stop cancer cell cloning. The drug called Rebecsinib showed good results in targeting the adar1 gene. Astronauts provided their blood for some experiments.

These findings bring hope for cancer patients, but the drug is not yet ready for human use. Researchers want to begin clinical trials soon.

Difficult words: treatment (medical care for an illness or injury), microgravity (very weak gravity, as in space), recurrence (when an illness appears again).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What were the significant findings from the experiment involving sending cancer cells to space and manipulating the adar1 gene? How do these findings bring hope for cancer patients and what are the next steps in the development of a potential treatment?
