Capitol rioters free – level 2
24-01-2025 07:00
Donald Trump pardoned 1,500 people connected to the attack on Capitol on January 6, 2021. Many people ended up in jail after storming the Capitol because Trump said the 2020 election was unfair.
Five people died, including a police officer, and over 200 officers were hurt. Trump’s pardons even freed people convicted of serious crimes. Some Republicans and police criticized this decision, saying it was wrong. Fourteen people convicted of serious crimes had their sentences reduced, so they left prison, but their crimes stayed on record.
Leaders of the riots celebrated. They believed that sending them to prison was unfair. Some people believe the pardons were unjust, but others think they were the right thing to do.
Difficult words: pardon (to forgive a crime), storm (to get in a place with force), convicted (found guilty of a crime), on record (in a document which shows what happened).
