Conjoined Twin Girls – level 3

In Australia, an 18-person team of medical professionals successfully separated 15-month-old conjoined twins from Bhutan after 6 hours of surgery.

The girls, named Nima and Dawa, were joined at the lower chest, pelvis, and shared their liver.

Doctors had not been sure if the girls shared a bowel and once they started the procedure, they had to reconstruct the twins’ abdomens. Now the babies are recovering at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

Difficult words: conjoined (joined together), pelvis (the bones between the middle of the body and the legs that hold up the body), bowel (the canal below the stomach), abdomen (the middle of the body).
