Crunchyroll and anime – level 3
06-06-2025 07:00
Anime, or Japanese animation, has become one of the fastest-growing areas in global entertainment.
At the center of this boom is Crunchyroll, a streaming platform that started small but now serves over 17 million subscribers across 200 countries. It brings anime to fans around the world by licensing shows from Japanese creators and offering subtitled and dubbed versions in several languages.
Crunchyroll’s biggest success is Solo Leveling, a series inspired by video games, which became a top hit in many regions. The growing interest in anime has led other major platforms, such as Netflix, to join the competition. Overseas interest in anime has now become larger than the market inside Japan. Crunchyroll currently holds about 75% of Japan’s anime titles on its service.
Crunchyroll is not only active in television. It is also behind many of the top anime films in US box office history, including Demon Slayer, which broke long-standing records. Fans can also buy merchandise, play games, or enjoy anime in cinemas.
Difficult words: dub (to replace original voices in a film with voices in another language), box office (the place in a cinema or theatre where tickets are sold), merchandise (products related to a show, like toys or T-shirts).
