Denmark’s post will not deliver letters anymore – level 3

05-09-2025 15:00

Denmark’s national postal service, PostNord, will stop delivering letters at the end of the year, ending four centuries of letter deliveries.

This decision comes as letter volumes have dropped by 90% since 2000. Around a third of the workforce, 1,500 employees, will lose their jobs, while 700 new positions will be created in the profitable parcel business. Online shopping and digital communication are key reasons for this change, as Danes increasingly rely on apps and digital mailboxes.

The transition reflects a global trend: physical mail is declining in many countries, with a 30–70% drop in major markets. Private companies, such as Deo, will take over the remaining letter deliveries, but concerns exist for the quarter of a million people who still rely on physical post. PostNord’s shift highlights the challenges traditional postal services face in a rapidly digitizing society.

Difficult words: profitable (making money or giving a financial benefit), digital mailbox (a virtual place on the internet where you receive letters or messages instead of papers), digitizing (changing information into digital form).
