A US pharmaceutical company, Merck and Co., received an approval from the European Commission to sell the first Ebola vaccine.

According to the World Health Organization, the vaccine is approved for people who are at least 18 years old, and it is almost 98% effective.

The main symptoms of Ebola are fever, pains, diarrhea and bleeding. It spreads very easily from person to person through bodily fluids.

In the largest outbreak, Ebola killed 11,000 people between 2013 and 2016. Currently, there are over 3,000 confirmed cases in Congo and more than 2,000 people have died. Merck has already given more than 250,000 doses to people in Congo.

Merck’s offical said that the new vaccine is a historic milestone that the whole world can be proud of.

Difficult words: pharmaceutical (related to drugs), outbreak (a start of a disease or epidemic), dose (a small amount of medicine that a patient gets at one time), milestone (an important event or stage in developing something).
