English clubs play well in the Champions League – level 3

05-02-2026 07:00

English football clubs have done very well in the Champions League this year. Five of the eight teams in the last 16 come from the English Premier League, and a sixth team may join soon.

The league has many strong clubs, and the matches are very hard and competitive. Players get used to fast and physical games, which helps them in Europe. Many teams also use set pieces like corners and long throws to score goals. The financial power of English clubs helps them get the best players and coaches.

Even if English teams do well in early matches, they face problems later. They play many games in England without a winter break, while other European teams rest. This can make players tired when the most important matches start. Experts say big clubs from Spain, Germany, or France may have an advantage in the last rounds. English clubs can prepare well for European games, but winning the Champions League is still difficult.

Difficult words: competitive (when you want to win or be the best), set piece (a special way to start the ball in football, like a free kick or corner), advantage (something that helps you win or do better than others).

What effect does the absence of a winter break in the Premier League have on English clubs during the later stages of the Champions League?
