EU countries bring back border checks – level 2

19-06-2025 07:00

The Schengen Agreement started 40 years ago. It helps people and goods move between many European countries without border checks.

But now, some countries like Germany are using border checks again. They want to control migration and stop problems with safety. Some experts say countries can use these checks only for a short time and only when there is a good reason. But many countries keep using them for a long time.

Some people think these checks are more about politics than real danger. One professor says many parts of Schengen still work. But when countries start border checks again, it is a problem. People worry that this shows the European Union is not as strong and united as before.

Difficult words: goods (things to buy and sell), border check (when officials or police stop people on the border of a country), united (working together as one group).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What concern do people have about the reintroduction of border checks and its effect on the European Union?
