Gaza has problems with waste – level 3

10-05-2024 07:00

Residents in central Gaza face a critical issue as domestic waste accumulates near their homes.

Within a mere 150 meters, a makeshift landfill poses serious health risks and raises concerns about children’s well-being. Since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, municipal services in Gaza haven’t been effective due to road blockages. Local people turn to alternative dumping sites that are not designated dumping zones. Domestic waste is piling up which leads to environmental degradation. Some people confirm the emergence of unprecedented diseases like sore skin and fevers, which, they believe, is a consequence of the waste’s toxicity. Officials warn that the waste could attract insects and stray animals and potentially contaminate the groundwater.

International assistance is necessary to mitigate these environmental and health hazards.

Difficult words: makeshift (temporary), unprecedented (never done or seen before), mitigate (to make something less severe or harmful).
