Ghana stops boxing – level 3

08-10-2025 07:00

Ghana has suspended all boxing events after two professional fighters died this year.

The government announced a three-month ban to create stronger regulations for the sport. A new committee will decide how to make boxing safer before athletes can compete again.

The first death occurred in March when Nigerian boxer Gabriel Olanrewaju collapsed during a fight in Accra. The second happened just weeks ago, when Ghanaian boxer Ernest Akushey died 11 days after his match. Authorities said the suspension is necessary to protect lives and rebuild trust in the sport. They also plan a five-year strategy to improve safety and bring Ghanaian boxing up to international standards.

Boxing is one of Ghana’s most loved sports, with famous champions like Azumah Nelson, but recent tragedies have forced the nation to rethink how it is managed and monitored.

Difficult words: suspend (to stop something for some time), regulation (a rule or law that controls an activity).
