Gingerbread NYC – level 3
19-11-2025 07:00
The Museum of the City of New York is hosting “Gingerbread NYC,” an annual event where professional and amateur bakers create detailed gingerbread versions of famous city landmarks.
This year, nearly two dozen participants from all five boroughs built edible replicas of iconic structures, transit sites, and cultural symbols. Their creations include the Statue of Liberty, Governor’s Island Ferry, the Roosevelt Island tram, and the Christopher Street subway station. Some bakers chose more unusual subjects, such as the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, admired for its bold design and technical difficulty. Others drew inspiration from literature or theater, including a “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” scene and a gingerbread Broadway stage featuring characters from well-known musicals.
For the first time, a classic New York food, the bagel with cream cheese, was also transformed into a gingerbread icon. The exhibition runs until January 19, 2026, and visitors can vote for their favorite piece.
Difficult words: edible (safe to eat), replica (an accurate copy), icon (a famous symbol or image that represents a place or idea).
