Helmets for Cyclists – level 3

14-11-2019 07:00

The National Transportation Safety Board, NTSB, recommended that all US states require all cyclists to wear helmets.

The reason is that between 2017 and 2018, there was a 6.3% increase in cyclist deaths which more caused by motor vehicles. The NTSB found that head injuries are the main cause of cyclist deaths but less than half of cyclists wear helmets. The agency says that using a helmet is the most effective way to reduce the risk of a serious head injury.

The NTSB chairman said that more and more people were using bikes, so it was necessary to protect cyclists better.

Currently, no states require that all cyclists wear helmets, but several states require helmets for children.

Difficult words: require (to make something necessary), motor vehicle (a car, bus or truck), cause (the reason of something happening).
