How ants changed Kenya – level 1
05-09-2025 07:00
In Kenya, a small ant comes and makes big problems.
The ant is called the big-headed ant. It eats many small animals like insects and birds. The ant also fights another ant, the acacia ant. Acacia ants live in trees and help trees stay safe. They bite big animals, like elephants, when these animals eat trees. But big-headed ants kill acacia ants. Then the trees are not strong, and many trees fall.
The land has fewer trees and more grass. This is bad for lions. Lions need trees to hide when they hunt zebras. With no trees, zebras run away. Lions start to hunt buffalo, but buffalo are big and hard to catch.
Difficult words: insects (a small animal with six legs), bite (to use your teeth to cut or hold something), hide (to put something or yourself in a place where others cannot see it).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
How does the decline in tree numbers caused by big-headed ants influence which prey lions hunt?
