Hungarian president resigns – level 2

15-02-2024 07:00

The president of Hungary Katalin Novak resigned. She pardoned a man who was involved in a case of sexual abuse in a children’s home.

Novak’s ties to Prime Minister Viktor Orban made people angry and there were protests. The opposition wanted Novak to resign. Prime Minister Viktor Orban tried to fix things by changing the rules, but it didn’t stop the scandal. Now, the head of the ruling party and another leader also resigned.

Even though Orban’s party is leading now, people are unsure about the upcoming elections.

Difficult words: pardon (to excuse or forgive), sexual abuse (making someone take part in sexual activities without their wish or agreement), scandal (an action or event which makes many people angry or upset).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What actions did Prime Minister Viktor Orban take to try and resolve the scandal involving Katalin Novak's pardoning of a man involved in sexual abuse in a children's home?
