Hungary’s new immigration law – level 3

05-03-2024 07:00

Hungary is about to implement what is considered the strictest immigration law in the European Union.

The law, which replaces a longstanding one in effect for 16 years, places significant emphasis on prioritizing Hungarian citizens for employment opportunities, aiming to safeguard their job prospects. The law’s rationale lies in addressing the escalating influx of migrants to Hungary. The legislation orders that immigrants terminated from their jobs must leave the country within a strict six-day timeframe, facilitated by their employers. Moreover, family reunification for third-country nationals employed in Hungary is abolished. Residence permits are categorized based on skill levels, distinguishing between highly skilled and low-skilled workers. Additionally, the law introduces a novel concept termed the ‘golden visa’ offering residency to individuals making substantial investments in real estate within Hungary.

Despite its intentions, the legislation faces opposition from left-wing political factions within Hungary’s parliament.

Difficult words: rationale (the reasons or intentions that cause a particular set of beliefs or actions), facilitate (to make an action or process easier), abolish (to formally put an end to), novel (interestingly new or unusual).
